Neon light, 1000mm:100mm
Minimalism in the 1960s popularised the use of the title “untitled,” but Hirakawa transforms this into a neon sign in a vertical Japanese writing style.
The vertical text, u.n.t.i.t.l.e.d, is composed of eight letters, two of which appear prominently as crosses.
As a person of Asian origin, Hirakawa has been creating contemporary art works carrying a complex of sorts in terms of contrasting cultural backgrounds
within a Western-centric art world. The work thus exposes this unease (though expressly not against the religion).
The work makes up an extremely refined installation that is not merely a show of aesthetic sense, but rather holds a sharp critical stance in its conceptuality.
